By AnetteEg
David A. Neuman's psychological horror thriller Kaleidoscopic Shades: Within Black Eternity weaves together past suffering, inherited terror, and the hazy line that separates reality from a nightmare. Neuman expertly creates a vivid and horrifying setting that will capture readers' attention from the first page. This surroundings will carry them to a foggy world in which time is split and reality bends under the weight of secret and incomprehensible terrors. To them, this world will be utterly invisible.
Joshua Triplow, a seemingly typical youngster growing up in Corona, California, is the central character of the novel. However, beneath the facade of suburban normalcy, Joshua is troubled by reoccurring nightmares about a mystery guy in black. These dreams, far from being typical childhood worries, begin to reveal a much deeper history. Bob, his father, understands comparable dreams from his own troubled past since he knew the horrors he thought he had escaped had returned with a vengeance. As the book progresses Bob learns that the horrific events buried in another dimension and time have resurfaced in his family's lives.
Neuman excels in building tension, drawing readers into a world where sanity teeters on the edge. The idea of time and reality is cleverly twisted, with Joshua’s nightmares revealing a deeper, more sinister world beyond the veil of the ordinary. The clocks in the story, ominously ticking toward nowhere, are a powerful symbol of the futility of escape and the inevitability of confronting one’s darkest fears. The endless plains of “Black Eternity” that Joshua faces are both a literal and metaphorical manifestation of isolation, fear, and a creeping descent into madness.
The novel is not just about external monsters but also an exploration of internal demons and inherited trauma. Bob’s struggle with his sanity becomes a central theme, adding a layer of psychological complexity to the supernatural elements. Neuman deftly explores how the past, especially unresolved trauma, can resurface with devastating consequences, forcing characters to confront what they had long repressed. The generational connection between Bob and Joshua gives the story emotional depth, highlighting the long-lasting impact of past experiences on present lives.
Kaleidoscopic Shades is a captivating read for fans of dark, mind-bending thrillers, as it combines psychological terror and supernatural mystery. Neuman's exquisite yet unsettling approach and skill to create an immersive environment guarantee that readers will be captivated by this horrible trip into the future. Long after you finish this book, it will cause you to doubt illusion and reality.
About the Author David A. Neuman
Born in Adelaide, South Australia, David A Neuman was gifted with a vivid imagination. In the late seventies, he walked out of Norwood High School an underachiever to embark on a scholastic journey before graduating from Flinders University in Behavioral Science.
Some thirty years ago, disenchanted in the rigidity of life's endless stop signs, he penned Kaleidoscopic Shades - Within Black Eternity and, if not for a chance meeting with a man of poetry, this gold book award winner would have remained a secret passion. Though he has written several other novels, yet to be released, he admits that each production is a two year dedication and similar to stumbling over a rough diamond before looking into its heart.
Neuman continues to live in Adelaide with his four-legged companions: Saffron, Cinnamon and Ginger - his very own Spice Girls. It is here he feels at home, especially when exploring its ghostly past, understanding that, regardless of one's background, we are all in this together. And always will be.
