Editorial Book Review:
By JP Cooper
Clinical brilliance doesn't guarantee business success. That observation opens The Business of Healing and lands with the particular weight of something that has been true for decades but rarely said out loud in medical training programs. Sterling and Stephen Carter have watched talented clinicians launch practices and watch them struggle, not because they weren't excellent at medicine, but because nobody ever taught them cash flow, compliance, or how to build a team that doesn't fall apart when you step out of the room.
The brothers know this territory from the inside. Fraternal twins, both US Army veterans, they built therapy, hospice, and staffing companies together and watched all three land on the Inc. 5000 list in the same year. That is not luck. That is the result of the exact systems, frameworks, and hard-won operational knowledge they distilled into this book. When they describe the transition from clinician to CEO, they are not borrowing a metaphor from the business school world. They are describing a transformation they made themselves and helped others make across two decades of building Cartera Health.
What gives the book its particular usefulness is how practical it stays throughout. The shift from reactive operator to strategic system-led leader. Building teams that scale without your constant involvement. Becoming bankable to lenders and investors who do not automatically understand healthcare economics. Leveraging technology and automation in ways that reduce burnout rather than add to it. Each of these challenges gets the specific, concrete treatment it deserves rather than the high-level theory that most healthcare business books retreat to when the territory gets complicated.
The mission-driven dimension is not a marketing qualifier here. Sterling and Stephen Carter are explicit that the goal is to prove you can build a highly profitable, bankable enterprise without ever losing the soul of your care. That combination is rarer in healthcare than it should be, and this book is the clearest current roadmap for achieving it.
For clinicians ready to build something that lasts, and for healthcare executives who want both the profitability and the purpose, this is the mini MBA the industry has been waiting for.
