Editorial Book Review:

By TJ Brown

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that has become so normal we stopped noticing it. The constant scrolling, the sleep that never quite restores, the low-level anxiety humming underneath everything, the feeling of being perpetually behind on something you can't quite name. David Rabin has spent twenty years in clinical rooms listening to people describe exactly that feeling, and A Simple Guide to Being Alive is his most direct answer to it yet.

What immediately sets this book apart is the voice. Rabin is a board-certified psychiatrist, a translational neuroscientist, a research scientist, and the co-founder of Apollo Neuroscience, which is about as credentialed as it gets in this space. And yet the book reads like a conversation with someone who genuinely enjoys being human and wants you to remember that you do too. There is real humor here, and real warmth, and both feel completely intentional coming from someone who understands that the nervous system responds to safety and playfulness in ways that clinical seriousness simply cannot replicate.

The central reframe Rabin offers is both simple and quietly radical. Safety, not productivity, is the foundation of performance, joy, and longevity. That idea cuts directly against the optimization culture that has convinced so many people their worth is measured in output, and Rabin makes the neuroscientific case for it without losing the human being on the other side of the argument. A deep breath, a shared laugh, a twenty-second hug: these are not soft alternatives to real solutions. They are real solutions, and the science behind why they work is genuinely fascinating.

The inclusion of psychedelics as part of the healing conversation reflects both his clinical expertise and his willingness to go where the evidence leads, even when that territory makes traditional medicine uncomfortable.

For anyone whose nervous system has been running on high alert for so long it forgot what calm feels like, this book is exactly the kind of company that helps you remember. It is warm, smart, funny, and deeply, practically useful.
