Editorial Book Review:

By TJ Brown

There's something magical about stories that show childhood through feelings as well as events, and this book does that so well. Because of the Night put me right in the mind and heart of my ten-year-old self who felt alone, misunderstood, and quietly desperate to fit in. What struck me the most was how gently yet powerfully the story explores those universal childhood emotions—sibling rivalry, self-doubt, and the longing to be seen for who you truly are.

The nighttime adventure at the heart of the book is both whimsical and wise. It never strays too far into fantasy to lose its grounding, but it’s dreamlike enough to invite wonder and curiosity. The journey the main character takes, both literal and emotional, felt like a blend of fable and memory, and it carried a lot of emotional truth. The strange old woman and the setting on the boat made it feel like a classic, but with a new twist that made it feel very personal and up to date.

I really enjoyed how the story trusts its readers, especially the younger generation. It doesn't put down or oversimplify things. It gives you time to think about your feelings without feeling like you have to fix or explain everything right away. The story moves at a slow pace that lets the emotional arc happen naturally, which makes it appealing to both kids and adults. It's not often that you can find a family story that is truly sweet, imaginative, and full of wonder.

The writing itself is evocative without being too ornate, and always attuned to the emotional landscape of the story. When children's books are written with empathy, they often capture a voice that sounds akin to a child, but also wise beyond her years. This was true in the dialogue, inner thoughts, and descriptions of this very book.

Because of the Night is the kind of book I would have cherished as a child and still find meaning in as an adult. It speaks to the quiet hurts and hopes we all carry, especially when we’re young and unsure of where we fit. It’s tender, imaginative, and deeply human - a nighttime journey that leaves the heart a little lighter by morning.
