By Kristine Kennedy
There’s a particular kind of survival that doesn’t look like survival at all. It looks like a packed calendar, a demanding career, and a life in constant forward motion. Katie Bruce was good at that version of surviving, and Becoming Whole is her reckoning with how long she was able to keep it going and what it cost her.
The memoir traces a life built on avoidance. An emotionally distant childhood laid the groundwork. Harmful relationships followed. Alcohol and cocaine filled the gaps, all of it carefully hidden behind the convincing appearance of someone who had things figured out. Bruce was successful enough, busy enough, and mobile enough that the truth could stay buried, at least for a while.
What forced the stop was a multiple sclerosis diagnosis. Chronic illness has a way of collapsing the strategies that once kept difficult feelings at bay, and Bruce writes honestly about what happened when the motion finally ceased and she had to confront what had been waiting underneath it. The question at the center of the book becomes whether she will accept the future she feared or change what she actually could.
What makes the memoir work is Bruce’s unflinching honesty about the layers involved in addiction and recovery. This isn’t a story of one bad habit overcome with willpower. It’s a story about how childhood wounds become adult patterns, how those patterns get reinforced by the relationships we choose, and how substances can function as a logical solution to unbearable emotional pain until they become a problem of their own. The MS diagnosis adds another dimension entirely, forcing a confrontation not just with addiction but with identity, mortality, and the limits of control.
Bruce writes with clarity and earned self-awareness. Becoming Whole is a hard book about the kind of healing that doesn’t come with shortcuts.
