Editorial Book Review:
By Mary Woolf
Syrl Kazlo's Samantha Davies Mystery series continues with a delightful read in Chilled to the Dog Bone, a cozy story full of comedy, small-town charm, and a gripping murder mystery. In addition to setting the stage for a strange celebration and a terrifying murder, Kazlo takes place on a chilly St. Patrick's Day weekend in upstate New York.
The main character, Samantha Davies, is a likable children's book author and amateur investigator who gets swept up in another investigation when the local fire chief is found dead—frozen and in an extremely dangerous position—during a fun outhouse race. The weekend of games in little town quickly devolves into a terrible mystery when Sam and her outspoken friend Gladys are both accused of the murder. Sam goes from being a reluctant participant to an active detective as he looks for and kills suspects, including local firemen and Sunny Foxx, a stunning woman whose fingerprints are found all over the crime scene.
Kazlo skillfully balances suspense with wit, infusing the narrative with just the right amount of humor to make the darker elements more accessible. The quirky side characters, particularly Sam’s rug-hooking group known as the Loopy Ladies, add charm and dimension to the story, grounding the mystery in a community setting that readers of cozy mysteries will love. In addition to being a lovable sidekick, the dachshund, Porkchop, plays an important role in the investigation team, providing lightheartedness and a personal touch to the plot.
Kazlo’s strength lies in her ability to maintain a light-hearted tone without sacrificing tension, creating a mystery that feels accessible but still keeps readers on their toes. If you enjoy cozy mysteries set in small towns and have a soft spot for amateur detectives and their canine friends, you're going to love Chilled to the Dog Bone. Anyone seeking to curl up with a cozy mystery that doesn't take itself too seriously would find this to be a great choice, thanks to Kazlo's creative plotting and her charming and approachable protagonist.
