Editorial Book Review:

By Samantha Borcy

Kimberlee Richardson sets up her debut with a premise that feels both immediately gripping and completely plausible: a healthcare administrator arrives at a new hospital for a fresh start and discovers that the electronic health records system she has been hired to implement is hiding something. Not a glitch. Not a data error. Something deliberately buried. And the people who buried it are still very much present.

Emily Sanders is a protagonist worth following precisely because she is not a trained investigator or a fearless whistleblower by nature. She is someone trying to keep her head down, rebuild her life, and do her job well, which makes every step she takes toward the truth feel genuinely costly rather than heroically inevitable. Richardson understands that the most compelling thriller characters are the ones who are afraid and keep going anyway, and Emily's courage is rendered as a choice rather than a personality trait, which makes it feel real.

The healthcare setting gives the book a texture that most thrillers in this space miss. Richardson draws on her own expertise in healthcare administration and organizational ethics to render Richmond General Hospital as a place that feels genuinely institutional, with all the bureaucratic pressures, information siloes, and power dynamics that real hospitals contain. When the corruption Emily uncovers begins to reveal itself in layers, the escalation feels organic to the environment rather than manufactured for plot convenience.

What gives the book its emotional depth beneath the suspense is the romantic thread woven through the investigation. Richardson manages the balance between thriller tension and romantic development with more skill than most debut novelists attempt, letting each element breathe without allowing one to overwhelm the other.

For readers who enjoy medical thrillers with genuine emotional stakes and a protagonist whose courage feels earned rather than assumed, this is a confident and genuinely engaging debut. Richardson is a writer worth watching.
