Book Description

Seventeen-year-old Sam, the daughter of a New England heiress, has tried hard to fulfill her father’s dying wish: “Take care of your mother for me.” Not an easy job. When her impulsive, romance-writing mom announces her engagement to a man whose last heiress wife died under suspicious circumstances, Sam tries to dissuade her mother. But her mom is convinced she’ll finally have the “Happily Ever After” she writes about.

And then Sam’s life implodes. Her mom’s fiancé turns up dead, and a mountain of circumstantial evidence points to Sam as the killer. On trial for murder, she fights to prove her innocence with the help of her boyfriend’s dad, an ex-homicide cop.

Just when things are looking especially bleak, Sam uncovers evidence she never expected to find. She faces a tough decision: At what point does the price of loyalty become too high?

Editorial Review

Deadly Setup by Lynn Slaughter is classified as a teen and young adult mystery and thriller type of book. It is a fictional book that revolves around the main character, a seventeen-year-old teenager named Sam. She is no ordinary teenager as she is the daughter of a New England heiress. In the unfortunate wake of her father’s death, she is left to care for her mother; however, her mother follows other plans as she intends to marry a suspicious man despite Sam’s caution. Then, as if things could not get worse, the man Sam’s mom intends to marry is murdered and Sam is accused. Although Sam is a young character, she is strong, and she fits until the end. She does not give up and proves that she is a force to be reckoned with. She teams up with her boyfriend’s father who assists her in proving her innocence in the murder investigation. I do wish the other characters were a little more developed as the main character of Sam. But they are still all very integral in the story’s plot and development, which plays out smoothly. There are unexpected plot twists with a great sense of suspense to keep readers turning every page with anticipation. It took a little bit to get the story rolling but once it really started, it was rolling quick until the very end. I had a difficult time finding good stopping points and wanted to keep on reading until the end. I read this book in just a couple of days. The writing itself is well-edited and the content of the story is organized in a sensible and effective manner. Although I am not a teen myself, I overall found this book very entertaining, and I think other adults as well as young teens would enjoy this mystery story. I would love to read more from this author again.
