Death by Chaos was such a delightful surprise that I can’t wait to dive into another one of Renaii West’s novels.
The story is based on a sultry and fiery woman named Tasha who connects with her three roommates to form a bond that will tie them together for several decades of their life. When the four characters meet, they begin a banter that might make the reader wonder if the chaos is actually going to be a part of their life together. However, it seems the four take their differences and run with them as they attribute themselves to legendary goddesses and own up to their chosen goddess’s charms/strengths. It was really cool to get to know them.
The plot itself flies by. At first, I thought this novel was going to be about a mysterious death, but the actual mystery is far more fun to figure out. Tasha is forced to dig deep in order to get the answers she and her old roommates’ desire. There are a lot of characters in this book, so make sure you pay attention because it would be a shame to miss any of the details provided.
Renaii West’s writing style is fun and gripping. She uses knowledge of history, geography, and mythology to weave a story that will make you feel like you’re sitting in the passenger’s seat (which can be a wild ride once you get to know Tasha.). Her dialogue is flirty and quick-witted, while her descriptions will make you feel like you’re spending an afternoon in Cali. As a reader that used to live in Southern Cali, I found it enjoyable to head back to places like Hemet and Ojai…without having to deal with the heat of the desert.
I would love to read more about the characters in this book. Perhaps a follow-up novel that goes deeper into some of the shenanigans the goddesses got into during their college years. A novel on each one’s unique story, especially their lives prior to college and post-college would also be phenomenal. Miranda, in particular, is a character that really speaks to me. She was such a rebel and I feel her story deserves more attention.
All in all, if you love mysteries, bold characters, good old-fashioned cover-ups, and a little spice then this is a novel you’ll want to add to your TBR.
