Editorial Book Review:

By William Reimers

Some middle grade adventures entertain. DropZone makes you feel brave. E. M. St. Denis builds a story that moves fast, but never forgets the heart beating underneath the action. What makes this first book in the Weyanoke Falls series stand out is its balance of danger and warmth. Yes, there is mystery, but there is also loyalty, curiosity, and the excitement of finding out who you are when things go wrong.

Reading it feels like summer, when everything matters. The soft, purposeful emotional beats and fast pacing keep you turning pages. Finn's voice sounds creative and hopeful, never giving up. Her relationship with Dotty comforts her through tough times. The suspense is great, but the friendships and human moments are what stick with you. Young readers will relate to Finn's doubts and bravery, and adults will remember how hard it is to grow up.

The story is mostly about trust, resilience, and how friendship can make an uncertain world easier to deal with. The treasure hunt and the danger that is about to happen are more than just plot points. They are like the risks we take when we meet new people and go to new places. The book speaks to anyone who has felt like an outsider trying to plant roots.

St. Denis writes with clarity and movement. Her sentences are easy to understand without being too thin. She uses sensory details to ground scenes, like the creak of an old house or the charged air before something bad happens. The structure builds tension in waves, which lets young readers feel suspense without being too much.

DropZone leaves behind more than excitement. It reminds us that being brave often starts with small decisions. This is a great start to a promising series for readers who like smart adventures with heart and grit.
