Editorial Book Review:

By LD Clarke

Some retellings just change the setting and call it new. Emerald Shadow, Golden Whisper: A Robin Hood Romantasy feels like it actually wants to question the story it comes from. It takes something familiar and starts pulling at it, especially around what it means to be the “hero” when your choices aren’t clean and your loyalties keep shifting.

Reading it feels a bit like being caught between two instincts. Part of you wants the classic rhythm of rebellion and justice, but the emotional side keeps getting in the way in a good way. I ended up paying more attention to the tension between characters than the action itself. There’s a quiet pull in those moments, where trust never fully settles and every connection feels like it could turn.

The book leans into power and class in a way that doesn’t stay in the background. It keeps asking who actually benefits from rebellion and who gets hurt along the way. The romance doesn’t soften that, it complicates it. It makes every decision feel more personal, like choosing someone can also mean choosing against something else. That tension carries through the whole story.

J.A. Bennett’s writing takes its time, sometimes more than expected. Scenes stretch, conversations linger, and not everything is spelled out. At first I wasn’t sure about that, but it started to work as the story went on. It gives space for the emotional shifts to land instead of rushing past them. There are moments where the imagery stands out quietly, especially in the contrast between safety and danger, comfort and risk.

By the end, it doesn’t feel like a retelling anymore. It feels like something that’s been reshaped from the inside out. It’s worth reading if you’re looking for a fantasy that cares as much about emotional tension as it does about rebellion, maybe even more.
