Editorial Book Review:

By Daniella Stewart

Some stories feel like a quiet walk along the beach, where little things you find slowly become important. Shirley Lee Baldwin's book Empty Pockets: Feathers, Treasures, and Sandy Paws has that kind of spirit. It takes readers to a place where ordinary things become little treasures and where being curious, kind, and paying attention are the best ways to get there. From the first pages of the book, it seems like something simple but important is going on.

Reading it feels calm and reflective. There is a softness to the rhythm that encourages readers to slow down and notice the details. The experiences in the story spark quiet emotions. The story gets warmer, more magical, and more comforting as it goes on. It doesn't hurry. Instead, it lets moments breathe, which helps readers connect with the characters and what they learn in a natural way.

The book is mostly about curiosity, loving nature, and the little things that make life better. The story is about finding value in things that seem normal. These ideas are more than just the story. The book gets across a feeling that anyone who has ever collected small things, stopped to look at nature, or spent time with a pet will understand.

The author writes in a relaxed, inviting way that fits the mood of the story. The language is friendly and honest, which makes it easy to get into the story. Descriptions bring scenes to life in a way that is clear but not too much. The story moves along naturally, so it's easy to turn the pages and still have time to think and picture things.

The story leaves a soft impression that lasts. It reminds people that the little things we pick up along the way can often have a lot of meaning. This book is a quiet but rewarding read that will stay with you after you finish it. It's perfect for people who like stories that make them think, characters that are warm, and a little bit of everyday wonder.

About the Author

Shirley Lee Baldwin

Shirley Lee Baldwin is a native Virginian and alumnus of the University of Virginia. She has written plays, poems, and short stories for fun since the fourth grade as encouraged by a kind and supportive teacher, Mrs. Scott.

Inspired by her small-town, multi-generational upbringing and world travels, she is excited to share her new middle-grade series Feathers, Treasures & Sandy Paws—stories for the young and young at heart.

If you’ve ever wondered what your pet was thinking; or had such a strange experience you weren't sure if it was a dream; or discovered something with the help of your best friends; or love a quiet afternoon exploring the back corner of an old bookstore, then her latest book series is for you. Readers are promised a little magic, a little mystery, and hints and glints of life's true treasures.

Do you like secrets? See how many you can count in “Big Little Secrets”—Book Two in the series.

After living overseas for twenty years, Shirley left the foothills of the young and mystical Himalayas and returned to the foothills of the ancient and mystical Blue Ridge Mountains. Why? Because there’s no place like home after a good adventure or two . . . or twenty!
