Editorial Book Review:
By Laura Zeller
From the first page, R M Tembreull draws readers into a broken world where the stakes seem both huge and very personal. Fractured State is a story full of tension, imagination, and urgency that makes readers think about what happens when things go wrong, how people hurt each other, and how fragile the natural world is. Reading it is immersive and sometimes unsettling. It makes you feel awe for Tembreull's vision, worry for the characters, and a constant reflection on how we treat each other and the planet.
There is a fight between order and chaos in this book. It is also about taking care of the earth and the fight that people have with nature. People think about these ideas not only in their made-up worlds, but also in their real lives, with other people, and even in the world itself. They are big and small at the same time because some parts of the story are made up and the characters are hard to figure out. This journey is full of exciting ideas, thoughts on the environment, and ways to grow as a person.
Tembreull writes well and in a lot of different ways. With its vivid pictures and unique language, it brings his world to life. It goes back and forth between the human point of view, the consciousness of elements, and observations from other worlds, weaving together a tale that is rich, complicated, and makes you think. If you like simple stories, the worldbuilding and language can be hard at times, but the depth is worth the work and interest.
Some of the most memorable parts of the book are when Arden McBride meets allies from other worlds, when she talks to a talking tree named Komkom and when the Great Cascade is in danger. These scenes are powerful on an emotional and philosophical level because Tembreull can link trauma in people with myths about the environment.
In the end, Fractured State is a story that stays with you because it has adventure, knowledge about the environment, and mythical wonder. It's a world that R.M. Tembreull writes about that is both scary and beautiful, hard and educational. Anyone who wants to take a journey into the unknown and think about the world we live in should read this book.
