Editorial Book Review:

By Tony Collins

Dustin Dunbar's Her Holiness: A Novel is a bold and luminous work that is both spiritually intense and narratively suspenseful. His vision is unwavering and urgent, drawing readers into a world where human resilience, faith, and power intersect in a narrative that is both original and profound. This novel defies convention, and its author establishes himself as a daring voice that is unafraid to challenge boundaries.

Dunbar's prose is both elegant and accessible, seamlessly guiding the reader through intricately layered characters and richly rendered settings. The narrative is both compelling and assured, seamlessly interweaving personal awakening, political intrigue, and mysticism without ever losing its emotional core. The descriptive passages possess a cinematic quality that heightens the reader's immersion in both the intimate and monumental moments of the narrative, while the dialogue is sharp and resonant.

At its core, Her Holiness explores the fundamental concepts of divine calling, institutional power, and the unwavering pursuit of equality. Through Kate Murphy's narrative, the novel delves into critical questions about the nature of authority, the intersection of tradition and truth, and the concept of embodying conviction in the face of significant opposition. It is not only pertinent, but also profoundly moving, as these themes encourage readers to reflect on their own relationships to courage, justice, and belief.

The effect of the book is both intellectual and emotional. Intellectually, it provokes consideration of the structures that govern spiritual and cultural life, pressing readers to confront the tension between ancient tradition and progressive possibility. Emotionally, it delivers moments of awe, empathy, and unease, drawing the reader into Kate’s haunting visions and her fierce determination to shape a more inclusive future. It matters because it dares to reimagine what leadership, sanctity, and legacy might look like in a world hungry for transformation.

Dustin Dunbar writes with conviction and grace, offering a narrative that is as thought-provoking as it is enthralling. Her Holiness is a work of significance, a novel that lingers long after the final page, urging readers to look deeper into the mysteries of faith, power, and the human spirit.
