Editorial Book Review:
By TJ Brown
In I Found My Piece, Rashmi Kumar Shah delivers a tender and profoundly timely story that empowers young readers to navigate emotional upheaval with grace and self-awareness. With heartfelt clarity and gentle wisdom, she introduces children and families to the transformative power of mindfulness in the face of big life changes.
Shah's writing is perfectly calibrated for young readers and the adults who guide them, as it is warm, accessible, and fluid. The narration is characterized by a soothing rhythm and is rooted in straightforward yet evocative language that reflects the viewpoint of a child without sacrificing emotional nuance. The text is expected to be beautifully complemented by the illustrations, resulting in a cohesive and immersive experience.
At its heart, this book explores themes of emotional resilience, change, and inner peace. The story follows a child grappling with fear and uncertainty about moving to a new place—feelings that are both universal and deeply personal. Shah portrays meditation as a tangible and nurturing tool that enables children to ground their emotions and discover stillness within themselves, rather than an abstract practice. The metaphor of the "puzzle piece" poignantly encapsulates the sense of fragmentation that often accompanies change and the healing powers of mindfulness.
The emotional impact of this book is undeniable. It provides a constructive, empowering response while gently validating a child's anxiety. Consequently, it serves as a model of open communication and emotional intelligence for both children and the adults who provide them with support. Regardless of age, this book fosters the development of empathy, self-regulation, and confidence, all of which are essential for overall well-being.
Shah's message is both straightforward and profound: peace is a quality that can be developed from within, and even the smallest of us can find tranquility in the midst of chaos. She bridges the gap between emotional education and spiritual grounding by combining an accessible introduction to meditation with storytelling.
I Found My Piece is a luminous addition to the canon of children's literature that nurtures the heart as much as the mind. The book is a must-read for families navigating transitions, educators teaching emotional literacy, and anyone seeking a gentle, inspiring entry point into mindfulness for children.
