Editorial Book Review:

By Celeste Hann

After reading Jigsaw & Jane, I was struck by how vividly Jane Howatt brings both her characters and setting to life, creating a story that’s deeply affecting and surprisingly introspective. Howatt has a way of making her characters feel familiar yet intriguing, especially Jane, whose journey kept me turning the pages as she navigated the unexpected challenges in her life. The book is a mystery as well as a moving examination of personal perseverance; this complex narrative makes it especially unforgettable. Rooting for Jane at every new move, I became totally enthralled in her universe.

What I loved most about this book was the balance between suspense and character depth. Howatt deftly creates suspense and develops Jane as a very human protagonist, therefore transcending mere plot to guide the narrative. She seems to be growing and adjusting; her decisions and ideas seem real. Her difficulties are windows into her character, thereby enabling readers to personally relate to her rather than only hurdles. I also appreciated the pacing—Howatt keeps the suspense tight without ever sacrificing the emotional moments that give the story its heart.

Howatt’s prose is another highlight for me. Her writing is clear yet full of nuance, capturing details and emotions that make scenes feel alive. She has an amazing capacity to make the commonplace spectacular, and her descriptive approach brings the locations to life, whether they are peaceful town corners or situations fraught with suspense. I often found myself rereading paragraphs merely to appreciate the elegance of her words.

Jigsaw & Jane is more than just another mystery. It's a narrative of self-discovery, bravery, and the value of perseverance. Whether you enjoy character-driven mysteries or simply want a thought-provoking read with well-developed characters, this book is a welcome choice. It reminds us that the pieces of our lives don't always fit together neatly, but there is beauty and strength in putting them together. Overall, Howatt has written a novel that will stay with you long after you've finished reading it, making it a worthwhile read.

About the Author

Jane Howatt

Her life as a housewife and mother was ready for a change. With her boys at eight and ten and her husband devoted to his career as a physician, the time had come for her to pursue her dream of writing.

One morning, she stumbled upon a newspaper article about Detective John “Jigsaw” St. John, who had recently won a medal for solving a major murder case. Intrigued, she reached out, and after several phone calls, he agreed to meet.

Over the next thirteen years, he introduced her to a world she had only imagined—dingy motels, harrowing crime scenes, startling autopsies, and maximum-security prisons. Along the way, she became fascinated not just with the business of murder but also with a man whose compassion for victims, passion for justice, and unmatched sleuthing ability earned him the LAPD’s Badge Number One.
