Editorial Book Review:

By Matt Dawson

"Lincoln's Agent: The Hunt for a Killer" kept me interested because it was a perfect mix of true history, suspenseful writing, and deeply human problems. You feel like you're really in the tumultuous age of the Civil War when loyalty is thin and every choice is fraught with danger. As the story follows a determined U.S. Marshal through a complicated web of spying, murder plans, and a society that keeps things secret, the stakes never drop. But what really struck me was how well the struggle between people was shown.

The inclusion of a fascinating and ethically dubious character created levels of suspense and made the Marshal face not only outside dangers but also his own values. Their relationship swings from manipulation to real connection, which kept me hooked. The author deftly combines these human conflicts with more expansive historical events, including political machinations and the notorious James brothers, so producing a narrative as personal as it is epic.

Still, I appreciated most how the book refused to sacrifice complexity for action. The people are completely formed, with motives as raw and captivating as the historical backdrop itself. Every turn feels earned, and few books manage to bring the past alive in the way that the beautifully depicted environments—from smoky saloons to the stark devastation of war—do. This isn’t just a story about espionage; it’s a meditation on what drives us—loyalty, love, ambition—and the costs of those pursuits.

For anyone drawn to historical fiction that thrills while still challenging the heart and mind, "Lincoln's Agent" is a must-read. It’s the kind of story that stays with you, its characters and questions echoing long after the final page. David Spitz has crafted a tale that doesn’t just transport you to another time but makes you reflect on your own.

About the Author

David Spitz

In 2016, at the age of 63, David Spitz decided to pursue a BA in Creative Writing, applying to several universities to follow a lifelong passion. When one particular university requested a writing sample, the journey that became Lincoln’s Agent On The Trail of a Killer was born.

Writing had always been a dream, and in July 2016, David took a significant step by publishing his first lyric through ChangeMakers Publishing. Now an independent author, he continues to explore storytelling across various genres.

For David, the joy of being an author lies not only in the opportunities it creates but also in its rewarding nature, which he finds less demanding than lyricism. Influenced by the works of Robert Ludlum, John Grisham, Alistair MacLean, and Kurt Sutter, David crafts compelling narratives that captivate and inspire readers.
