Editorial Book Review:

By SB Borcy

Some stories feel like they were written to be remembered, not just read. Locked Memory Box is different because it shows the messy, funny, painful truth about friendship over time and treats those bonds as strong as love or ambition. This book cares a lot about the quiet moments that shape a life, as you can tell from the first pages.

At the same time, reading this book makes me feel better and more moved. It's a sweet and funny story that also makes you miss something and think about it. The reader goes through happy, sad, hard, and strong times in Charlee's life. It slowly makes you feel bad, and it makes you think about your friends, the choices you need to make, and the people who have known you for a long time.

The book is mostly about friendship, memory, identity, and how time changes us. These ideas are bigger than the characters on the page. People often think that their chosen family can help them get through hard times. This story jumps back and forth between childhood and adulthood, which makes this idea very familiar. The book also talks about loss and caregiving in a gentle way, making those moments feel real instead of heavy.

D.C.’s writing is warm and inviting, with a natural rhythm that makes the story easy to settle into. The way the structure flows through the different stages of life is similar to how memories come back and overlap. Care is taken with the humor, which mostly shows up in the friends' conversations. There are parts that are quiet for just long enough to stand out. It gives the characters more depth without making them seem too much when they talk about places, like at camp or later in life.

It's the scenes that show how the Monkey Club knows each other and has a history together that stand out. There are lots of small ways that inside jokes and body language can really help people connect with each other. At the end of Locked Memory Box, there is a tribute to friendships that last and the stories we tell each other. Read this book if you like to think, connect with other people, and see how beautiful it is when people live their lives together.
