From the first page, the story hooked me with its mix of family, personal growth, and the difficulties of trying to be independent. Setting the story in the changing 20th century, it does a great job of showing the compromises women make, the pressures of society, and the courage to break free. What I liked most about the book was how it told the stories of women who didn't follow the rules of their time but worked for their own paths. The book was very relatable for me because it showed parts of myself and other people I know.

We went from one woman to the next, and each had her own problems but some that they had with the others. It was nice to see people of different ages sharing. What interested me was how the mother-daughter bond was shown. Each woman grew as a person, and their paths crossed with each other on occasion. I couldn't help but be interested in how close they were.

The transition from Belgium to the United States was another part of the story that added richness. The settings were vividly described by the author, giving the characters a sense of place that enriched their emotional journey. In addition to reading, I was able to experience the mood, the women's hardships, and their victories as they made their way through their respective worlds.

The idea of persistence really hit home for me. The characters were incredibly strong, even when things went wrong. Their stories helped me remember that it is worth the trouble to find personal happiness and break free from social norms. I was moved and thought-provoking by how the author woven these ideas into the story, and it stayed with me long after I finished reading. I will remember this book for a long time because it's a beautiful story about growth, power, and having the courage to face challenges.

Marguerite Duvivier

Marguerite Duvivier, a pseudonym, was an academic in the field of anatomic pathology who spent her formative years in Belgium where she also attended medical school. Her career led her to Boston, Massachusetts, where she pursued further training. Although she made significant contributions to her field, the author seeks to address a wider audience through her book, Middle Sisters. Her work delves into various themes that resonate with a broad spectrum of readers, including women's challenges in personal and professional life, world history, poverty, affluence and religion, all imbued with a dash of humor.
