Editorial Book Review:

By Christian Cooper

Shep Rose built his entire public identity around the philosophy that saying yes to everything is a superpower. For over a decade on Southern Charm, millions of viewers watched him live that philosophy out in real time, cocktail in hand, wit fully deployed, the life of every party he ever attended. By fall 2023, the wheels were coming off.

What happened next is not the story you would expect from a reality television personality facing a reckoning. After a near disastrous drunken weekend at BravoCon that left him full of shame and facing serious consequences, Shep made an unconventional choice: he flew to Costa Rica for a week of Ayahuasca ceremonies at the Rythmia wellness retreat. That decision is the hinge point of this book, and everything before and after it is examined with a candor that the carefully edited version of Shep Rose that television audiences know has never quite allowed.

From his first ceremony, where he saw himself as the pole of an amusement park ride that could send everyone flying if he wasn't stable, to the profound night when he witnessed the machine and underwent what he calls spiritual heart surgery, each experience peeled back another layer of self-deception. These are not easy passages to write, and they are not easy to read, which is exactly why they matter.

What makes the book genuinely worth your time is what it refuses to do. It does not present Rose as cured or transformed into someone unrecognizable. Instead it offers something more honest: the story of a man still in process, trying to understand himself without bravado, easy answers, or a polished self-help conclusion.

The writing flows with Rose's signature humor intact, which is both a relief and a skill. Finding the funny in material this vulnerable without using it to dodge the emotional weight is considerably harder than it looks.

For anyone who has ever suspected that their greatest strength might also be the thing standing in their way, this short and surprisingly moving book knows exactly that feeling from the inside.
