Editorial Book Review:

By Lucia Wilson

From the initial page, Maryanne Wood’s narrative captivates readers through its warmth, humor, and genuine sense of adventure. Randall and Hunter Go with the Flow is more than a narrative about two Basset Hounds journeying from California to Vermont—it is a thoughtful examination of curiosity, bravery, and the importance of embracing life's unexpected moments. Experiencing it evokes the sensation of accompanying the dogs, sharing in their wonder, minor anxieties, and instances of happiness. The narrative immerses the reader in a world that is both recognizable and captivating, prompting reflection on personal experiences of transformation and exploration.

At its core, the book examines resilience, flexibility, and the strength of friendship. Randall and Hunter encounter new surroundings, initial snowfalls, and unforeseen encounters, and their journey imparts a universal message: embracing change can be invigorating, fulfilling, and enjoyable when undertaken with an open heart. These themes transcend the narrative, resonating with individuals navigating the process of adapting to new challenges or circumstances.

Wood's prose is characterized by its whimsicality, expressiveness, and sensitivity.  Her portrayal of Randall and Hunter accurately reflects their individual characteristics, specifically Hunter's reserved inquisitiveness and Randall's intrepid eagerness.  Her descriptions are evocative, effectively conveying the essence of snowy landscapes, intimate moments, and minor escapades.  At times, the narrative tempo decelerates within descriptive sections; however, this provides readers with the opportunity to appreciate the illustrations and the story's unhurried cadence.

Memorable moments encompass the dogs' initial experience with snow, which sparkles with joy, and subtle interactions that reveal the profundity of their connection. Wood’s storytelling skillfully integrates humor, warmth, and insight, imparting to readers a lasting sense of comfort and inspiration.

Ultimately, Randall and Hunter Go with the Flow is a book that entertains, educates, and motivates. It serves to remind readers—regardless of age—that life's transitions can be approached with curiosity, bravery, and camaraderie. It is a story to treasure, disseminate, and revisit repeatedly.
