Editorial Book Review:

By K Hemard

Most Americans spend more time planning a vacation than planning their retirement. That observation opens the book, and it lands with the particular sting of something that is both obvious and genuinely alarming once you sit with it for a moment. Randy Thurman has spent four decades watching what happens when people arrive at one of life's most consequential transitions without a real plan, and this book is his most direct attempt to change that.

Reading it feels like finally getting the honest conversation about retirement that most financial professionals never quite have with their clients, either because the session ends too soon, the questions feel too basic to ask, or the terminology builds a wall before the real concerns can surface. Thurman dismantles that wall methodically across 52 questions, and the structure turns out to be genuinely well chosen. It is not arbitrary. It mirrors the way uncertainty actually accumulates in a person approaching retirement, starting with the foundational question of whether they are actually ready, and building outward into the specific decisions about Social Security timing, Medicare choices, tax strategy, and how to turn savings into income that doesn't run out.

What separates this book from the crowded retirement planning shelf is the combination of credentials and candor. Thurman has the technical authority of someone who has managed a billion-dollar advisory firm for nearly forty years, and he uses that authority not to impress but to simplify. The answers here are not hedged into uselessness or buried under disclaimers. They are the kind of clear, direct guidance that most people only get if they are lucky enough to have the right advisor.

The framing of the book as a road trip planning guide is more than a metaphor. It gives the reading experience a genuine sense of forward movement, of territory being covered and decisions being clarified rather than deferred.

For anyone within a decade of retirement who still feels more uncertain than ready, this book is exactly where to start.
