Editorial Book Review:

By Matt Dawson

David Gittlin’s River to the Multiverse is a thrilling exploration of loyalty, survival, and the weight of responsibility set against a vividly imaginative backdrop. As a visitor to Earth, the protagonist’s mission to aid humanity is both noble and urgent, especially as she shares her advanced knowledge to solve global crises. However, when a desperate call from her people pulls her into the heart of the Golden River Nebula, the story shifts from a tale of hope to one of agonizing choices. I was especially struck by the emotional depth of her journey. It was very real for me how hard it was for her to balance her job to protect her people with her growing connection to Earth, even though the setting was made up.

What stood out most was the meticulous world-building. Rich depictions of alien locations, advanced technologies, and interplanetary politics felt alive as though I were journeying with the protagonist. Striking images provided still another degree of immersion, so changing this story from a book to a visual experience.

I also appreciated how the story tackled universal themes of sacrifice and identity. The story moves deftly from its philosophical implications rather than seeming mired in them. Whether via quiet times of introspection or high-stakes challenges, the narrative keeps you intellectually fascinated and emotionally active.

Although part of The Silver Sphere Series, this novella is surprisingly accessible to new readers like me. The past is deftly incorporated without too much exposition, which lets me value the path of the protagonist and makes me anxious to check previous chapters.

River to the Multiverse is more than just a sci-fi adventure; it’s a heartfelt exploration of the human (and alien) condition. It challenges readers to think about what truly matters—loyalty to one’s roots, the courage to embrace change, and the determination to stand for something greater than oneself. Gittlin’s writing is both engaging and thought-provoking, striking a perfect balance between action and introspection.

This novella is absolutely required reading for everyone who like science fiction with a deep emotional core. It is evidence of how speculative fiction could force us to view our world—and ourselves—through a fresh prism. Deep diving into the series excites me!
