Editorial Book Review:

By Marie Jones

Thomas A. Burns Jr., an award-winning author known for sharing exciting stories, has written another exciting story from Natalie McMasters mystery. It's called "Shooters!" Burns' eighth book is a wild ride through the troubled life of detective Natalie McMasters, who is twenty-one years old. Her emotional and professional lives come together in the strangest ways.

Natalie McMasters, better known as Nattie, is in one of the most difficult and personal situations she has ever been in: she is pregnant and doesn't know who the father is. That person could be either her loving husband Danny or her real father, who was very mean to her. Burns is very good at writing fiction that deals with complicated real-life problems. This shocking turn of events adds more emotional depth and tension to the story.

Nattie is having a terrible time at work, on top of her personal problems. Uncle Amos's 3M Detective Agency is losing money, which puts Nattie, her family, and the agency itself in danger. The stakes are very high, and Nattie is desperate enough to take a job that many people will find offensive: security for a million-dollar nude beauty event that is run by a well-known social media influencer and openly sexist person. She has to make this choice because she needs the money, but it puts her in a moral gray area and right in the path of an angry enemy from her past.

While this is going on, Nattie's foster son Eduardo is dealing with his own problems. Because he feels bad about himself at school, he gives in to a bad influence that makes him do something violent that could change his life and the lives of those around him forever. Burns does an amazing job of showing Eduardo's situation, adding a heartbreaking subplot that makes the main story better.

The end of the story is nothing else than amazing.  Burns's ability to write a shocking, unexpected ending will leave readers gasping for air and change what they think modern crime fiction is all about. You can't miss reading "Shooters!" because it has personal problems, high-stakes action, and social commentary all in one.

Natalie McMasters is still a fascinating main character—a detective for the 21st century—and her adventures are both exciting and thought-provoking. Burns is very good at making worlds that are complicated and draw you in. In "Shooters!" every character's fight feels real, and every plot twist is carefully thought out. If you like this kind of book or want to read a different kind of detective story, this is the one you should get.
