The journey from a polished Los Angeles penthouse to the unforgiving depths of the Amazon rainforest is not just a physical one, and Broussard has always understood that the real territory this series is mapping is interior. By the time The 6th Heaven opens, Derek has Kendal, the woman who helped save him, and he is losing her anyway. Depression and obsession are doing what no external enemy managed to: pulling apart the life he fought so hard to build. That is a genuinely brave place to take a protagonist in a third book. Most series let their characters breathe in the sequel. Broussard keeps pressing, keeps asking what it costs a man to truly change rather than just survive, and the pressure she applies gives the book its emotional weight.

The Amazon sequences are the book's most striking achievement. Broussard actually traveled deep into the rainforest before writing these pages, and that immersive research shows in every detail. The jungle is not decorative. It pulses, breathes, threatens and illuminates simultaneously, mirroring the chaos and hidden clarity of Derek's own internal landscape. Father Mike, Derek's loyal friend and spiritual advisor, is one of those supporting characters who earns more space with each book, and his presence in the jungle chapters grounds the supernatural elements in something genuinely human.

Texas Book Nook called it a nail-biter filled with flawed characters you will root for from the beginning. That assessment is exactly right. What lingers after the final page is not the adventure itself but the question Broussard has been circling across all three books: what does it actually mean to be made new?
