Editorial Book Review:

By William Reimers

The Creeping, a psychological thriller by Alexandra Sirowy, is a deeply immersive and haunting work that captivates the reader from the chilling opening to the heart-stopping conclusion. Her command of suspense and emotion establishes an environment that is both unsettling and inquisitive, with each revelation feeling both inevitable and unexpected. Sirowy captures the intricacy of fear, memory, and identity with uncommon precision, showcasing an exquisite balance of darkness and beauty.

The reader is captivated by the eerie world she establishes, as her prose is both evocative and textured. As each scene unfolds with meticulous pacing and sensory detail, the tension is naturally built and an undercurrent of emotional truth is maintained. Sirowy's writing is not solely dependent on scares; rather, she creates an unsettling environment by utilizing psychological realism and a strong sense of place. The narrative is seamless, seamlessly transitioning between the present and the past to explore the precarious boundary between what is remembered and what is imagined.

The Creeping delves into the haunting nature of buried secrets and the enduring power of trauma at its core. It investigates the ways in which the past can interfere with one's understanding of the present and the ways in which fear—both real and imagined—can influence one's identity. A profound meditation on the search for truth, innocence, and guilt is concealed beneath its chilling exterior. The novel is elevated beyond its genre framework and positioned as a study in the human psyche as a result of the profound resonance of these themes.

The Creeping's emotional impact is undeniable. It leaves the reader feeling both disturbed and contemplative, prompting them to question the concept of self-awareness in the aftermath of a tragedy. Sirowy does not merely recount a ghost story; she encourages readers to confront the ghosts that reside within memory and loss. This novel is a thought-provoking and terrifying experience that lingers long after the final page, written by an author who comprehends the profound ways in which fear can reveal the most profound aspects of our being.

Alexandra Sirowy is a Northern California–based author of young adult thrillers, including her debut novel The Creeping and her second book, The Telling. Sirowy has been crafting characters and stories since fifth grade and continued her passion for understanding human behavior through her studies in International Relations at Mills College and a graduate degree from the University of San Francisco.

Beyond writing, she enjoys traveling—particularly to Istanbul—exploring nature, baking sourdough and seven-layer cakes, listening to music that inspires deep emotion, and sharing adventures with her husband and sister. She is an avid reader and an advocate for equality, bringing the same curiosity and compassion to her life as she does to her fiction. Alexandra is represented by Brianne Johnson of Writers House.
