Editorial Book Review:

By Erick Harris

Some fantasy books build worlds. The Dragonguard Chronicles: Blood Fury builds pressure. It throws you into a story where power, loyalty, and identity are constantly colliding, and it doesn’t really give you a comfortable place to stand. What makes it stand out is not just the scale, but the way it keeps tightening around its characters, especially when they try to escape what they are.

Reading it feels intense in a very steady way. Not chaotic, but heavy. There is always something pulling at the characters, something unresolved, and that tension carries through almost every chapter. I found myself less focused on who would win and more on who would break first. There is a kind of emotional weight tied to the idea of being born into something you did not choose, and that feeling sticks more than the battles.

At its core, the book is wrestling with identity in a way that feels bigger than the fantasy setting. Bloodlines, loyalty, and choice keep clashing, and none of them come out clean. It quietly asks whether you can ever fully step away from what made you, or if you are just reshaping it. That question makes the story feel more grounded than it first appears, even with all the supernatural elements.

The writing goes into detail and scale without hurrying. Roy Carlson lets scenes go on for as long as they need to, especially when he wants to build tension between characters. Even though it sometimes slows things down, the changes in perspective make that feeling of something bigger happening even stronger. The images stand out at times, especially when they show the difference between darkness and power. This gives the story a more visual edge.

By the end, it leaves more of a mark than you expect. Not because everything comes together neatly, but because it keeps circling back to choices that do not have easy answers. It is worth reading if you want a fantasy that feels less like escape and more like being pulled into something you cannot easily walk away from.
