Editorial Book Review:

By Mateo Michaels

Mary St. Onge's book is an evocative autobiography that takes readers on a spiritual journey to a serene and calming setting in the great outdoors. In a story that is heavy on introspection and self-improvement, St. Onge takes us to the peaceful setting of her summer house on a lake in Northern Minnesota, close to the Boundary Waters, where she learns invaluable lessons from nature.

There are a lot of short stories in this book that really show how people live on islands and in lakes. St. Onge's passionate writing and thorough descriptions of life by the lake bring the simple pleasures of nature and the complicated relationships between people that make up her experiences to life.

St. Onge explores the transformative and restorative powers of nature in this book. The lessons she learns from her experiences in nature about forgiveness, self-discovery, and letting go are invaluable. Her life is a testimony to the life-altering potential of embracing the present moment and finding inspiration in the wisdom of nature.

Additionally, the memoir explores the complex web of ties that exists throughout the island society. The vivid personalities shown by St. Onge serve to emphasize the power of community ties and the ability of common experiences to overcome differences. Through these exchanges, she shows how mutual respect and understanding can help people feel at home and propel them forward in life.

Mary St. Onge has, in essence, written a narrative that is at once very intimate and highly applicable to everyone. "The Forever Days" is a lovely ode to the restorative potential of nature and the ageless wisdom of peaceful waterfront contemplation. After finishing the book, the impression it leaves on the reader will be profound.
