Editorial Book Review:

By Samantha Jones

R.T. Lund's The Ghost transports readers to a fascinating and nuanced story set against the hauntingly evocative backdrop of Lake Superior. This story is the ideal blend of small-town intrigue and high-stakes crime, following a detective's persistent pursuit of the truth in a case that spiraled into a horrific web of murder, kidnapping, and chemical warfare. The rich plot is compelling from beginning to end, but what truly stands out is the genuinely human perspective—an uncompromising look at obsession, loyalty, and resilience in the face of adversity.

What I found most compelling about this story is its emotional depth and complexity. Apart from looking at a murder, the protagonist is handling moral obligations, personal issues, and unrealized aspirations. The story seems both exciting and surprisingly relevant because of the mix between the high-stakes drama and the emotional challenges of the individuals. My hunger for redress and resolution was captivated by this humanity, which kept me glued to the pages.

The pacing is masterful, with each twist and revelation expertly timed to maintain suspense. I loved how the clues and connections unfolded organically, challenging me to piece together the mystery while keeping me on edge with unexpected developments. The richly detailed setting adds another layer of immersion—the moody, picturesque landscape of Lake Superior becomes almost a character in itself, reflecting the story’s undercurrents of danger and beauty.

Lund’s ability to handle the intricacies of a multi-faceted investigation is impressive. The crimes are intricate and horrific, but it is the interplay between the human stakes and the larger consequences of the case that actually distinguishes this novel. Each supporting character contributes to the story, embellishing it with unique viewpoints and motivations that add to the overall mystery.

I was not just content but also profoundly moved by the time I reached the last page. The Ghost is a moving examination of human power and weakness rather than merely a crime book. This novel is a must-read for everyone who like clever, emotionally stirring thrillers with a strong feeling of location. I was excited to read more of the Lake Superior Mystery Trilogy after finishing it.

About the Author

R. T. Lund

R. T. Lund grew up in Duluth, Minnesota, the gateway to the North Shore of Lake Superior. When he was twelve, three teenage brothers from his neighborhood were swept into the lake from a concrete pier during a raging Spring gale. None of them was ever recovered. There began his fascination with the awesome, unforgiving lake.

Lund has worked as a lawyer and corporate executive, but fortunately he has evolved into a Minnesota mystery writer, and the big lake has a role in each of his stories. Minnesota is called the "Land of 10,000 Lakes," but the coldest, deepest, darkest, most foreboding lake is home to more bodies, shipwrecks and secrets than all the rest combined.

With a background in literature and law, Lund combines the backdrop of his beloved Minnesota with flawed characters and unexpected turns that he hopes will keep readers turning the page.
