Editorial Book Review:
By Fabiana Barbery
Most executives encounter immigration as a problem to be handed off. A visa application arrives on someone's desk, a compliance team handles it, and the business moves on. Lorraine D'Alessio has spent her career watching what that approach costs companies, in lost talent, in missed opportunities, in the slow erosion of competitive advantage that happens when workforce strategy stops at the border. The Global Advantage is her argument for a fundamentally different way of thinking, and she makes it with the authority of someone who has been inside the most complex immigration cases in the country.
As CEO and Founding Attorney of D'Alessio Law Group, recognized among the Top 50 Women Lawyers by the Los Angeles Business Journal and featured repeatedly on the Super Lawyers list, D'Alessio advises multinational corporations, executives, and entrepreneurs across technology, entertainment, education, and venture capital. That range of experience is felt on every page. She understands that the same immigration decision looks completely different depending on your industry, your growth stage, your risk tolerance, and whether you are trying to hire one critical specialist or build an entire international team.
The reframe at the heart of the book is both simple and consequential: immigration is not a compliance obligation. It is a business strategy. Organizations that understand how to approach it strategically are better positioned to compete for the world's top talent, and in an economy where the best people are not concentrated in any one country, that positioning is not a minor advantage. It is often the decisive one.
Through practical guidance, real-world examples, and clear explanations of visa options, employment-based pathways, and policy change navigation, D'Alessio gives executives the framework they need to make informed decisions rather than reactive ones. The writing is clear, direct, and completely free of the legal mystification that makes immigration feel more daunting than it needs to be.
For CEOs, HR leaders, and anyone responsible for building world-class teams across borders, this book arrives at exactly the right moment and fills a gap that has been sitting in the executive bookshelf for far too long.
