Editorial Book Review:
By Fabiana Barbery
Sara Stamford opens The Lost Souls with Elizabeth arriving in Los Angeles at twenty-two, carrying the particular kind of hope that only works if you don't look at it too closely. The city glitters. Chris feels like solid ground. And then, almost before Elizabeth has found her footing, the ground shifts. Stamford is very good at the moment just before everything changes, and this novel is built entirely out of those moments.
Anna arrives the way the most dangerous people always do in fiction and in life: irresistibly, apparently harmlessly, as the answer to a loneliness that Elizabeth hadn't quite named yet. Bold, unpredictable, magnetic, she represents freedom in the way that Los Angeles represents opportunity: compelling at a distance, considerably more complicated up close. Stamford tracks the friendship with the patience and precision of someone who understands that the most psychologically truthful thrillers are never about the dramatic turn. They are about all the small, almost reasonable choices that lead there.
What makes the novel work beyond its propulsive plot is the emotional intelligence Stamford brings to Elizabeth as a character. Her vulnerability is not a weakness the book looks down on. It is rendered as entirely understandable, the natural consequence of youth, loneliness, ambition, and the specific disorientation of trying to become something in a city that treats people as inventory. When she begins to lose herself inside Anna's world, you understand exactly how it happened, which is considerably more frightening than if it had happened to someone you couldn't recognize.
The comparisons to Liane Moriarty and Taylor Jenkins Reid that the book's own positioning invites are fair ones, both in the atmospheric pull and in the way the story refuses to simplify the women at its center. These are not heroes or villains. They are people trying to find their way, making it harder for each other in the process.
For readers who want their psychological suspense to feel genuinely inhabited, this is a confident and emotionally rich debut.
