Editorial Book Review:

By Fabiana Simmons

A physician makes hundreds of clinical decisions before lunch, and almost none of them happen the way our marketing assumes they do. That observation, from Harshit Jain's own LinkedIn the day his book launched, is the entire argument of The Next Marketing distilled into a single sentence. And coming from a Northwestern-trained physician who then spent years winning Cannes Lions and D&AD Black Pencils before founding the world's first global physician-only programmatic marketing network, it lands with the authority of someone who has stood on both sides of that gap and watched the disconnect play out in real time.

The pharmaceutical marketing industry has a problem it has been reluctant to name clearly. Physicians are drowning. Healthcare professionals spend six hours daily navigating digital systems, and many of them feel overwhelmed by promotional content. Traditional marketing approaches were built for a different era, one where attention was available and physicians had time to receive information in the ways marketers preferred to deliver it. That era is gone, and Jain makes the case for what replaces it with the precision of someone who has built the infrastructure to prove it works.

The answer he proposes is nudges, subtle, strategically timed behavioral interventions embedded directly into clinical workflows at the moment a decision is actually being made. Embedding nudges within EHR systems and clinical workflows, leveraging behavioral economics principles for ethical and compliant engagement, and implementing real-time interventions for affordability, clinical trials, and treatment decisions are not theoretical proposals here. They are tested frameworks drawn from real campaigns and real clinical environments.

What makes the book feel genuinely important beyond its industry-specific applications is the ethical seriousness Jain brings to the whole project. He is not describing how to manipulate physicians. He is describing how to reach them with information they actually need, at the moment they can actually use it, in ways that reduce burnout rather than contribute to it. That distinction matters enormously, and he holds it carefully throughout.
