Editorial Book Review:
By Dar Dowling
Some fantasy novels ask whether the hero will win. The Order of Masks asks whether winning is even worth the cost, and it never lets either of its protagonists off the hook long enough to stop asking.
Alina Bellchambers, an Adelaide author whose background spans acting, psychology, and a childhood spent in her parents’ bookstore, brings considerable craft to her debut. Set in a brutal Roman-inspired empire, the novel follows two women whose paths collide at the deadly trials of the Ravalian Court. Mira has spent years on the move, haunted by a past her mother refuses to explain, and she sees the trials as her only route to a secure future, despite the emperor having reasons of his own to want her dead. Scarlett is a princess hemmed in on all sides by ambitious brothers, a domineering mother, and a father who keeps his distance. Both women arrive at the court with everything to lose and almost nothing they can afford to trust.
The enemies-to-lovers dynamic earns its tension here because Bellchambers is genuinely uninterested in making either character easy to root for in the conventional sense. Mira and Scarlett are morally grey in ways that feel true rather than decorative, shaped by circumstance and survival rather than mere attitude. The line between ally and adversary keeps shifting, and the book is smart enough to let that ambiguity do the work rather than resolve it too early.
Comparisons to Throne of Glass and Fourth Wing are apt in terms of tone and audience, though Bellchambers brings her own texture, particularly in the psychological complexity she applies to women navigating power. The magic, court intrigue, and romantic tension are all well-calibrated, and the pacing rarely flags.
A confident, absorbing debut that sets up the duology’s conclusion with real momentum.
