Editorial Book Review:
By Solange Roe
Some children’s books sparkle for a moment. The Perfectly Beautiful Day settles in and stays. What makes this story stand out is how it treats everyday life as something quietly sacred, reminding readers that wonder does not have to be loud to be real. A soft sense of confidence in Dora keeps the MorningStar family story going. This lets kids know they can feel more than what they are told.
Reading this book feels soothing and emotionally warm. Slow down and enjoy small pleasures, shared moments, and the comfort of belonging. The stories have a calm rhythm that makes you want to do so. It makes you feel safe without making you lose your interest. Kids can get lost in the story, and adults who read along may feel a soft pull of nostalgia and love. The experience engages the heart more than the adrenaline, which is exactly its strength.
At its core, the book explores connection, kindness, family, and the beauty of ordinary days. These themes resonate well beyond childhood. Every person agrees that a day can be "perfectly beautiful" if it is lived with care and awareness. The story shows how important it is to care about each other, the natural world, and be patient.
Dora's writing is clear without being too simple, and it's poetic without being too heavy. The structure is easy to follow, which makes it great for reading out loud or by yourself. Her words seem thoughtful and kind, and she often uses images that make you feel light, warm, and present. The pace lets feelings land naturally, giving time to think instead of rushing to the next thing that happens.
There are many scenes that stay with you, especially the ones where Luna's awareness grows through simple interactions and shared experiences with the MorningStar family. It's clear that Dora is good at showing emotional growth through actions instead of words. The title itself becomes a quiet refrain that reinforces the message of the book without saying it again.
By the final pages, The Perfectly Beautiful Day leaves behind a feeling rather than a lesson. It is a meaningful addition to children’s literature because it honors gentleness, attention, and emotional intelligence. This is a book worth reading for anyone who believes stories can nurture not just imagination, but the way a child learns to see the world.
About the Author
Dora Dillistone

Dora Dillistone is an artist who relocated from Houston, Texas to Taos, New Mexico with her husband Carl in 2009. After being a working artist and studying art processes for over thirty-five years, this relocation demanded a dramatic change in life. Dora became an active participant in every aspect of art in Taos. Dora had a late life introduction to horses when she adopted an injured horse (Star) from the Equine Spirit Sanctuary in Taos. It was love at first sight and Dora became aware of the intricate relationship between horses and humans. When her husband purchased a Rocky Mountain horse (Jude), they both became immersed in learning to ride and in everything about horses. This brought about the purchase of MorningStar Stables. In 2018, a trainer (Rudy Lara Jr.) moved to the stables to train horses and brought with him a strange little mare (Luna). Dora’s artwork continues and revolves around her environment including earth, wind, rain and fire. Luna's story is a true record of her adoption into the Dillistone family and an observation of events during her first year in Taos.
