Editorial Book Review:

By Sandra Williams

In The Razing (Into the East, Book 1) by J.A. Davis, there are many levels to this supernatural story that looks at what happens when old cultures and new technology come together. Folklore, science, and philosophy are all woven together in a way that makes you think in this story, which is set in a world where farming groups become space travelers. What really interested me was how carefully the world was created. Everything feels like it was done on purpose, from the mystery of an old alien treasure to the changes it causes in society. The story builds up beautifully, going from a slow, almost peaceful beginning to a fast-paced, high-stakes plot that kept me turning the pages.

The philosophical undertones of the story really interested me and made me think about how people seek information, the effects of progress, and the price of immortality. In a world moving toward space flight, the clash between religion and science, slaves and philosophers, created an interesting dynamic. It's a look at how development may either ruin, modify, or improve a society, not only about power and fresh concepts.

The author's attention to detail is phenomenal. The descriptions of the artifact, the culture surrounding it, and the eventual unraveling of its implications are immersive and gripping. The world feels both fantastical and grounded, with a sense of history that makes the supernatural elements believable. While some of the dialogue felt slightly formal, it didn’t detract from the overall story—it felt fitting for the context and the weight of the themes being explored.

The mix between action and reflection is what I liked most. The story doesn't rush into its most important parts; instead, it gives readers time to understand how serious what's happening is. At the end, it made me think about how people deal with power, desire, and the unknown.

Anyone who likes stories that mix history, science, and the supernatural will find The Razing to be a fascinating trip. It's the kind of book that makes you laugh and think about its ideas long after you finish reading it. I can't wait to see how the rest of the story builds on this interesting base.

About the Author

J.A. Davis

Jeff and his wife met years ago while doing standup comedy in the Indianapolis area. It is that same sense of humor that has carried them along life's, sometimes, bumpy road.

After attending Rose Hulman Institute of Technology for Mechanical Engineering, Purdue University for Aeronautical Technology, and Liberty University for theological studies, along with currently being employed as a Senior Systems Analyst and IT manager for the world's largest diesel engine manufacturer, Mr. Davis decided to employ his love of technology and ancient discoveries into his other love of telling stories.

When he is not at work, or spending time homeschooling his two daughters, with most of the burden being shouldered by his lovely wife of nineteen years, Mr. Davis spends time reading through technical journals, ancient archaeological discoveries, biblical texts, or just sits next to his adopted greyhound or rescued cat to watch a few episodes on the SyFy channel.
