Editorial Book Review:
By Ricardo Law
The Shaft, A Supernatural Thriller is an engrossing installment in Scott Delaney's Global Calling Series, and I was immediately pulled to its uncanny blend of suspense, mysticism, and mystery. This isn't your ordinary thriller—it's interwoven with a profound investigation of faith and the unknown, all set against a disturbing mystery in a barren mine. My attention was captured from beginning to end by the environment that Delaney creates, which is both cramped and full of spiritual electricity.
The story follows a chilling and suspenseful journey surrounding a mysterious shaft in an abandoned mine, rumored to be linked to dark forces. The most interesting thing about the book for me was how Delaney makes the supernatural seem so close, almost real. As the characters deal with strange events and things that can't be explained, the tension builds. But the author doesn't rely on cheap jump scares or thrills; instead, they build a steady, creeping unease that kept me fully engaged. With every tale, I grew increasingly fascinated in the enigmatic depths of the mine and the brains of the characters.
What really sets The Shaft apart, though, is Delaney’s ability to interweave the supernatural with questions about faith, morality, and redemption. As the characters descend, physically and metaphorically, they are forced to confront their own beliefs and fears. Delaney doesn’t shy away from the big questions, and while the narrative is tight and suspenseful, it’s also thought-provoking. It had me wondering: what would I do if faced with such an otherworldly mystery? How would I grapple with something beyond human understanding?
The setting itself deserves mention, too. Delaney’s descriptions of the mine are rich and visceral, making me feel as if I were breathing in the stale air and feeling the claustrophobia of the underground. One of my favourite features of the book was this immersive experience, which enhanced the general suspense of the work.
Ultimately, The Shaft isn’t just a thriller; it’s a deep, atmospheric exploration of fear, belief, and the unseen. Delaney combines thrilling suspense with a sense of existential wonder, making it a haunting story that lingers. This is a must-read for anyone looking for a thriller that goes beyond the surface and digs into something truly profound.
