Editorial Book Review:
By Lauren Myers
In a society where urgency reigns supreme, Matt Reynolds offers a potent and much-needed reminder of what it means to live consciously. His dismantling of the fallacy that busyness equates to fulfillment or production caught my attention the most. Rather than providing another time-blocking technique or checklist, this book asks readers to consider what is really important to them. Reynolds uses his own experiences—from managing a multinational corporation to coaching athletes—to show how living in accordance with your principles may change the way you view time.
His emphasis on the "why" behind the decisions we make on a daily basis was what I valued most. He urges readers to begin planning their days around pursuits that provide lasting fulfillment and purpose rather than responding to pressures from outside sources. With realistic anecdotes and easy exercises that everyone can accomplish, no matter how busy they are, his writing is conversational but thought-provoking. I started thinking about my own routines and how much of my time is spent on activities that don't fit with my ideals. Rethinking how you approach your entire day is more important than simply improving your time management.
Reynolds doesn't simply point out the issue; he also provides you with techniques for breaking free from the incessant push to "do more." His strategies are refreshingly basic yet profoundly effective, such as learning to say no with confidence, making time for relaxation and thought, and grasping the value of slowing down. I especially appreciated how he addressed the emotional toll that urgency has on our mental health, demonstrating how simple, conscious changes may result in a far greater sense of serenity and control.
The book feels like a conversation with a trusted mentor who genuinely wants you to succeed, not just at work, but in life as a whole. Whether you’re a professional juggling endless responsibilities, a parent trying to balance family and work, or simply someone craving more joy and purpose in your daily life, this book offers actionable insights that you can start implementing immediately. It’s more than just a guide—it’s a call to reclaim your time and live with intention. This is a book that stays with you, inspiring you to move beyond urgency and embrace what truly matters.
