Editorial Book Review:
By Santiago Miller
Some books about law feel locked inside the same system they’re trying to explain. Unshackled: Reimagining the Practice of Law doesn’t feel like that. It comes across more like someone pushing against the walls from the inside, pointing out what isn’t working and not pretending it’s fine. That tension is what makes it stand out. It doesn’t just describe the system, it questions why it still runs the way it does.
Reading it feels a bit unsettling at times, especially if you’re used to thinking of the legal world as fixed or untouchable. It doesn’t overwhelm with jargon, but it keeps nudging you to rethink assumptions you might not have realized you had. I found myself going back to certain sections, not because they were complicated, but because they shifted how I was looking at the whole structure of the profession.
The book keeps circling around constraint, not just in terms of rules, but in how people inside the system operate within expectations they rarely challenge. It pushes the idea that change isn’t just possible, it’s overdue. That idea reaches beyond law. It connects to any field where tradition starts to feel like inertia, where doing things the “right way” stops making sense but continues anyway.
Paul T. Llewellyn writes in a way that feels direct and intentional. There’s a clear argument running through it, but it doesn’t feel rigid. The structure builds from observation into reflection, then into something closer to a call for change. It’s not trying to be flashy. The clarity is the point. Certain ideas land more because they’re stated plainly rather than dressed up.
By the end, it doesn’t feel like a guide with steps to follow. It feels more like a shift in perspective that you can’t fully undo once you’ve seen it. It’s worth reading if you’re open to questioning how systems work, especially ones people tend to accept without much resistance.
