Robby Dube grew up on a Texas ranch where the fields became alien planets and the woods became uncharted worlds. That childhood is fully visible in URSA, a debut epic fantasy that carries the unmistakable energy of someone who has been building this universe in his imagination for a very long time and finally set it free on the page.

The world of the Ursa Imperium is one of those rare fantasy settings that feels simultaneously ancient and urgent. Long after humanity's celestial past has faded beyond memory, a civilization teeters at the edge of collapse while a dark force rises from the desert with the specific kind of patient menace that the most compelling fantasy villains embody. The threat is not loud. It accumulates, and by the time the five central characters begin to feel its full weight, the reader already does too.

Those five protagonists are the book's greatest achievement. Dube could have built his world around a single hero with a clear destiny. Instead he gave us five different vantage points on the same unraveling world, and the convergence of their paths, as destinies intertwine and the choices each of them makes begin to matter to all of them, is handled with a structural confidence unusual in debut work of this scale. Each character carries a distinct moral logic, and the questions the book keeps asking about power, justice, and the cost of freedom are explored differently through each of them rather than delivered as a unified thesis.

Dube's background as a published short story author, with work appearing in Viridine Literary, Bewildering Stories, and Zoetic Press, shows in the prose. The sentences are doing real work. The world-building is specific without being exhausting. The pacing has the rhythm of someone who understands that epic fantasy earns its scale through the accumulation of smaller, precisely rendered moments.

For readers who want their epic fantasy to ask genuine questions while delivering genuine adventure, URSA is exactly the kind of debut that announces a writer worth following for the entire journey.
