Editorial Book Review:

By William Reimers

What The Lizard Said distinguishes itself by providing children with a means to view the world through curiosity and kindness, rather than through fear or confusion. Nels weaves a nuanced narrative in which enlightenment is expressed through straightforward interactions with animals, each exemplifying a core understanding of human behavior and interpersonal dynamics. This book merits consideration as it promotes introspection while preserving a sense of levity.

Reading this collection feels like walking alongside a trusted guide. The poems are warm and musical, and they have a steady beat that makes kids feel safe and gives adults something to think about. Two of Nels's characters, Wise Dog and Jimmi, are both interesting and comforting. People who have ever tried to make sense of strange situations will find their questions to be true. The experience is calming, a little whimsical, and surprisingly moving.

The themes reach well beyond childhood. Nels touches on respect, empathy, the beauty of nature, and the importance of listening even to small voices. These ideas resonate because they belong to every stage of life. The lessons, conveyed through clear language and vivid imagery, consistently maintain a light and engaging tone. Instead, they create a calm space where kids and adults can talk about how important it is to be kind, curious, and pay attention.

His artistry is evident in the rhythm and lucidity of the poems. The prose is engaging, characterized by a rhythm that renders reading aloud an enjoyable experience. One important part of the book is when the lizard says, "every creature carries a story worth hearing." This phrase sums up the book's main idea. Another important scene is when Jimmi realizes that the world is bigger, kinder, and more full of surprises than he thought it would be.

In the end, What The Lizard Said is a tender, thoughtful companion for families. It is a book that sparks connection, encourages imagination, and leaves a gentle imprint on the heart.
