YOUR MONEY: Things You May Not Have Thought Of is one of those rare financial books that feels like it’s sitting down with a trusted friend who’s been there, done that, and just wants to help you navigate the money maze. What impressed me the most was the author's ability to make seemingly difficult financial concepts quite simple. To keep you interested, the book combines personal stories, practical examples, and a fair dose of comedy, rather than just numbers and theory. I liked how it looked at often-overlooked aspects of personal finance, such as the true cost of vehicle loans and how tiny deposits in your early years can lead to financial freedom later.

The emphasis on financial education for young adults particularly resonated with me. Many people, including myself, may have gained early in life from this understanding. It's not only about learning to save or budget; it's also about realizing the larger picture of how money may work for you rather than the other way around. Instead of overload, the author's method of breaking apart the worth of timing, decision-making, and routines empowered me.

I also loved the way this book doesn’t pretend that everyone’s financial situation is the same. It provides flexibility and acknowledges that not everyone is starting from the same place. The tone is warm and nonjudgmental, and the advice is realistic. For example, the section on planning for retirement doesn’t just focus on saving a certain percentage—it discusses different lifestyle goals and how to tailor your plan to what matters most to you.

What sets this book apart is the author’s ability to make you feel like it’s not too late, no matter where you are in your financial journey. The actionable tips and real-world insights left me inspired to take a closer look at my own finances and make adjustments. I ended the book feeling as if I had obtained a toolkit for not only improved money management but also a new perspective on my connection with it. If you want an enlightening and practical guidance, this book is a must-read.

About the Author

Bob Simmons

Bob Simmons' journey into money management began at the age of 13, delivering the Long Island Press newspaper to 32 customers. This early experience taught him that earning money required effort. Later, he worked at McDonald’s—one of the first in Suffolk County—where he faced challenging conditions, such as working without air conditioning and enduring high temperatures with the aid of salt tablets. Over time, he advanced to the position of night manager.

In 1964, Simmons joined the United States Trust Company of New York, starting in Operations before transitioning to Trust Administration within a few years. This role involved direct interaction with clients. During this period, computers began making their way into the business world, and the company introduced a standalone computer with a floppy disk for experimentation. Fascinated by the technology, Simmons spent increasing amounts of time mastering the new machine, eventually becoming the division’s computer liaison. His role as Trust Administrator evolved into that of Family Wealth Manager, serving prominent clients such as the U.S. Secretary of State, the Ambassador to France, the head of the CIA, and one of the wealthiest families in the world, as noted by Forbes magazine.

After retiring, Simmons dedicated several years to working full-time at Mercy Haven Inc., where he had previously served on the board for 14 years as a Founding Director, Treasurer, and Board Chair. He also spent a year as a consultant with Deutsche Bank. Currently, he is involved with the Community Computer Connections Program and serves as the database manager for Friends of Connetquot.
