Editorial Book Review:

By Jazmín James

Zendra of the Periphery, by Seth T. Thatcher, is a captivating space opera that transports readers to a painstakingly crafted universe full of risk, ambition, and an impending galactic war. The novel's story arc is enthralling, following a young prodigy from another world who is unwittingly thrust into the center of a cosmic conflict. The sheer breadth and richness of the world-building were the most appealing aspects for me. Thatcher creates entire civilizations, each with its own set of rules, customs, and political tensions, resulting in a massive universe that feels alive and dynamic. The galaxy, or rather universes, in which this takes place feels genuine and weighty, with aspects of rich world politics and ethical problems that raise the story above mere action.

One aspect that really stood out to me was how Thatcher balances high-stakes battles with introspective moments. Although the individuals must choose between a merciless hostile force and an unrelenting quest for survival, each one has personal stakes that complicate their choices. I was emotionally immersed in the story the entire time because of the contrast between the epic and the personal. The antagonist in particular brings a level of darkness and intensity to the novel that raises the stakes considerably, and seeing the protagonist’s unique resourcefulness was immensely satisfying as they navigated this danger.

The author’s skill in building tension across various plot points is impressive. Every twist felt earned and reinforced by the characters’ pasts and the histories of their worlds. The narrative pulls you along, blending moments of high tension with strategic revelations that add depth to the already intricate setting. It’s a galaxy that seems to unfold as you go, with new planets, ideologies, and conflicts introduced in ways that build the anticipation.

The book is a great example of why space operas are so interesting. It pulls you in, keeps you guessing, and blends big-picture themes with small-scale ones. This book is a must-read for any sci-fi fan looking for an adventure that will make them think and race their heart. It also sets the stage for a great series to come.
