Editorial Book Review:
By Marcos Buttler
Reading Dr. Adi Jaffe's Unhooked was a profoundly instructive experience that shifted my perspective on addiction and recovery. The book isn't just another handbook with stiff procedures and generic advice; it takes a caring and humane approach that meets you where you are. What impressed me the most was Dr. Jaffe's emphasis on overcoming the shame and stigma connected with addiction. Rather than depending on labels or one-size-fits-all solutions, he provides a framework that is flexible, practical, and deeply personal.
The Explore / Accept / Transform model was a revelation. It helped me understand how addiction isn’t just about willpower but often stems from deeper issues like trauma, unaddressed emotions, or unmet needs. I found his emphasis on self-awareness and acceptance incredibly empowering. It’s not about punishing yourself for past mistakes but about understanding your triggers and habits, and then building healthier ways to respond. This approach felt liberated since it is based on empathy rather than judgment.
The way Dr. Jaffe combined his professional knowledge with personal experience was highly appreciated. Knowing he had gone through comparable challenges gave his counsel relevance and grounding. His sensitivity imparted a degree of genuineness that let me rely even more on his direction. His stories and illustrations throughout the book also inspire me since they show how anyone ready to put in the effort can undergo metamorphosis.
Though the book is full with useful skills and activities, it never feels overburdling. Every stride is broken down into doable steps, which helps to make the process seem reachable anywhere you start from. There is something here for everyone whether your challenges are with addiction, helping someone else, or just developing better practices.
I was moved and had new ideas about how to deal with addiction and mental growth in general by the time I finished Unhooked. Dr. Jaffe's method is new but based on humanity, so anyone who wants to make a difference can use it. For people who are ready to let go of the past and move on to a better, freer future, it's more than just a guide.
